Hunting Pheasant
For The Beginner
If you are a hunting novice that has received your first
invitation to go on a pheasant hunting expedition, chances are
you need some guidance. Here are some tips to help your prepare
for your trip and enjoy your first round of pheasant
hunting.
Some of the preparations that you will need to make are
simply common sense. As an example, you will want to wear
clothing that is appropriate for the weather and the land
conditions. A good thing to keep in mind is that the
temperature is likely to increase as the day progresses.
Clothing that is layered and allows for easy removal of top
layers during the day will help to keep you comfortable while
you hunt.
Second, ask about if the hunting will be done as teams.
Since this is your first time to hunt pheasant, you probably
will be paired with a seasoned veteran. This is actually
the best arrangement for you, as it creates a situation where
you have a resource. Your hunting partner can provide you
with advice on what type of gun to bring along, how to dress,
what type of boots to wear, and any other item that may be
helpful while hunting pheasant. Your partner can also
clue you in on such important details as how to watch for cues
from the dogs and introduce you to some techniques on how to
flush out pheasants.
Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions. If people realize
this is your first pheasant hunting trip, most will be more
than willing to share their expertise. Generally, a lot of
people like to be mentors. The advantage for you is that you
can learn a great deal about hunting pheasant in a short period
of time, with very little trial by error involved. Once you
have had the chance to go out with the pros a couple of times,
pheasant hunting will begin to settle into a comfortable
routine for you, possibly becoming a sport that you will enjoy
for years to come.
