There are two qualities to a hunting knife that you want to take into consideration before you purchase. The first is the build quality and durability of the knife itself. A high quality hunting knife should be made of only the finest steel, so be sure to ask the maker about the toughness of the blade and which steel was used. Also enquire about the hardness and whether or not the blade has any innate flex in it due to the heat treating and tempering processes. The other criterion that you should look for in any and all hunting knives is how well the blade can handle sharpening.  Every knife you buy will come sharp from the manufacturer, but you will notice that this sharpness dulls after each use. At some point, you will have to sharpen your own knife – and if the blade does not take sharpening well (due to faulty construction, a blade design that is mostly for decoration, or improper heat treatment of the steel), you will have a very difficult time returning the blade to its factory sharpness, making that brand of hunting knives practically useless.
